Ministry of Defence
At your service!
During my internship at the Dutch Ministry of Defence, I designed and developed an interactive e-learning module used by military trainees. The module allows users to explore the components and functions of military radio equipment through engaging and self-paced learning.
I was responsible for the full UX/UI design and frontend development, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The goal was to make complex military hardware understandable in a visual and user-friendly way.
The module is currently in active use and helps soldiers train independently in preparation for field operations!

Key tasks:
β’ UX/UI design of the learning experience
β’ Frontend development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
β’ Designing interactive elements and animations
β’ Collaborating with content experts from the Ministryof Defence

The challenge
The original course β WWAN-2 β already existed but was developed using outdated code and did not meet the current technical requirements of the Defence platform. In addition, the interface was no longer user-friendly or accessible for modern learners.
The new version had to:
β’ Work within strict technical boundaries of the Defence learning ecosystem (VIO)
β’ Explain complex topics using interactive visuals, sound effects and animations
β’ Be intuitive and accessible for soldiers in training
β’ Function as a standalone, testable module β with clickable and rotatable buttons, feedback sounds and layered mapping logic
Due to privacy and confidentiality reasons, only select parts of the course visuals may be shown.

What I learned
β’ Translate real-world complexity into clear digital interfaces
β’ Develop usable, responsive, and testable frontend components
β’ Adapt to high-stakes environments with limited testing opportunities
β’ Collaborate in a defence setting and follow strict protocols
This was one of the most valuable experiences in my studies.
Besides the technical growth, this internship gave me insight into the Defence culture β from simulation shooting sessions to trench drills β and made me feel part of a dedicated community.
πͺ Final result
The final course is now actively used by the Ministry of Defence and integrated within the official Virtual Instruction Environment (VIO). It enables soldiers to train independently, intuitively, and interactively, even when field training is not available
At the closing of my internship, I was honoured with a personal challenge coin as a token of appreciation. This symbol of recognition is typically awarded for exceptional contribution and commitment.
